On 17th July 2020, the Shareholders of Orient Bank Limited (‘the Bank’) entered into an agreement with I&M Holdings PLC for the sale of 90% of the issued share capital of the Bank. The transaction is subject to conditions including regulatory approvals from the Bank of Uganda, Central Bank of Kenya, and Capital Markets Authority of Kenya.
Upon completion of the transaction, the remaining 10% shareholding shall be held by Dr. Ketan Morjaria (a founding member of Orient Bank) and Mr. Alemayehu Fisseha. Subject to receipt of regulatory approval, Dr. Ketan Morjaria shall continue to be a member of the Board of Directors of the Bank.
The Bank’s Board and Management wish to advise the public that the proposed transaction is entered into, as part of the Bank’s growth strategy aimed at becoming a leading player in Uganda’s banking industry and part of a strong and growing regional banking group.

Today we launched the Orient Business Academy as part of our CSR programme. The Business Academy will run for 10 weeks facilitated by Makerere University Business School.
Participants will compete for UGX 60m cash prize for business development. To qualify for the Orient Business Academy, any small business that has been in operation for between 1 and 3 years (12 to 36 months) and has an annual turnover of less than UGX 120 million is eligible to participate in the Orient Business Academy.

Orient Bank celebrates 25 years with FastPay Mobile App launch
Orient Bank Uganda Limited has today celebrated 25 years of banking excellence in Uganda by launching a revolutionary mobile banking application FastPay. The mobile banking application launched by the Governor Bank of Uganda Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile allows convenient account opening from wherever one is with just a mobile phone and a national ID.
Speaking at the celebrations, Bank of Uganda Governor said; “To succeed in today’s competitive environment Banks must harness the power of innovaton in providing financial services needed by businness and in this regard Orient Bank has actively designed customer focused products and services in order to achieve compettiive advantages. I congratulate the Bank”.
Bweyogerere Branch was officially opened on Tuesday 11th July 2017 by Mrs. Justine Bagyenda, the Executive Director Supervision, Bank of Uganda who urged consumers to demand for their rights when they access financial services from any financial institution. The event was graced the Orient Leadership Team led by Managing Director Orient Bank, LCIII Chairperson & Town Clerk Kiira Municipality.
The Orient Bank Business Academy season one was concluded on Thursday 20th April 2017 with a graduation ceremony that was presided over by the Deputy Governor Bank of Uganda Dr. Louis Kasekende.
As part of the training, the small businesses were tasked to come up with growth plans for their businesses. The 5 businesses with the best growth plans were to win funding of up to UGX 30 million depending on the feasibility of their plans & their business needs.
2ambale, an e-commerce business, emerged the best student of the Orient Business Academy after developing the best business growth plan and was awarded 20 million shillings by the bank to grow their business.
Elma Foods, emerged second and were awarded 10 million shillings to grow their business.
Other businesses that were awarded funding were Happy Bee Honey, Mutundwe Chalk Factory and African Culture Leather Factory who walked away with 5 million shillings each.
Orient Bank has launched a business academy to provide Micro and Small Enterprises with business management training and financial support to enable them grow and contribute to Uganda’s job creation and economic development. Speaking at the launch of the academy, Orient Bank MD, Julius Kakeeto noted that although Uganda has the highest levels of entrepreneurship in the world, it also has one of the highest business failure rates with most business start-ups dying within 5 years. The Chief Guest at the launch was the Deputy Governor, Bank of Uganda, Dr. Louis Kasekende who commended Orient Bank for the initiative saying that SMEs are an engine of economic growth and must be supported by both government and the private sector. The academy that is being run in partnership with the Makerere University Business School (MUBS) – Entrepreneurship Centre will train 20 to 30 Micro and Small Businesses and provide business growth funding of up to 30 million shillings. Dr. Moses Muhwezi, the Deputy Principal, MUBS was also at the launch and he welcomed the partnership with Orient Bank.
